A fixed appliance is an item which may be fastened to a support or otherwise secured in a specific location. and is usually connected to the electricity supply via a fused outlet to which the flex is permanently connected, e.g. cookers, storage heaters, extractors, hand dryers etc...

All electrical systems need to be maintained so as to prevent danger, therefore even fixed appliances need to be inspected and tested on a regular basis.

It is generally accepted that where fixed appliances are used withing commercial and industrial locations, they should be tested and inspected at a frequency of between one and four years depending on equipment type and environment.
